KUCHING: The free school bus programme initiated by the state government is set to commence by April.
Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg said that further details will be made known by Transport Minister Datuk Lee Kim Shin in a separate announcement.
Abang Johari last year announced the programme among a host of other state government initiatives in the State 2020 Budget.
“The buses will start by April; in principle it is done. It costs RM4 million to run and will be operational in Kuching city,” he told reporters yesterday.
Earlier, he officiated at the Sarawak Kita Empun programme organised by Parti Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) Women at PBB Headquarters, Jalan Bako yesterday.
“It is for our school children to use and is borne by the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) state government.
“This is only possible due to our economic policy that funds our initiatives for the betterment of Sarawakians,” he said.
Last year, the chief minister said that the programme could commence in April or May with the state government at the time still planning the routes and stops for the free bus service.
