KUCHING: Young activists with leadership skills and high integrity should be featured as fresh faces of Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) for the next state election, says political pundit Associate Professor Dr Awang Azman Awang Pawi.

He said that getting more fresh faces representing GPS could boost support among the younger generation.

“GPS should create more policies for youth participation in politics and become one of its main manifestos.

“Their representation in running for political positions — into the State Assembly could be the leeway in scrutinising the current issues involving youths.

“This includes issues on youth employment, skills training, the issue of getting affordable housing for young couples, their opportunity to receive support for them to pursue their studies provided with incentives, a competitive entrepreneurial schemes for young people need to be more aggressive,” he said recently.

He also said that by coming out with such policies, this would encourage more young people to actively participate in politics.

“GPS should come out with policies that catered to the aspirations of these younger constituents.

“The voices of the youth will not only be heard, but must be taken into account if any party (political) wants to gain political power through their votes.

“This will spur some of these younger voters to take a greater interest in politics and to voice out on issues affecting youths and the country.

“This move is important as youths are the ones who will shape the future of the nation.”

Asked whether such a strategy could unseat all Democratic Action Party (DAP) representatives who are the incumbent, Awang Azman opined that it was quite possible for local-based parties to fully swap DAP seats.

“I do not feel that any local based parties can be able to fully swap and unseat DAP seats.

“This is because the DAP party has the strength of supporters and relevant issues.

“After all, many Chinese and urban voters prefer to have a check and balance in the state government,” he added.
