MUKAH: Fishers appear to have started flooding Sungai Tellian again, this time in compliance with standard operating procedures (SOPs) which must be followed throughout the recovery movement control order (RMCO).

Approximately five kilometres from Mukah town, Sungai Tellian – known for its cleanliness (despites its reddish black water) – is a haven for freshwater prawns.

A local angler, Got Lai, said around now is the freshwater prawn season.

“The taste of prawns (and fish) from this river is different from those of other rivers because the water is unpolluted.

“Although the freshwater prawns here are of high quality, they are still cheaper than those sold at other places which usually fetch around RM70 to over RM100 per kg,” he said.

On the impact of prawn fishing in Sungai Tellian on the local people, Got said it had helped many villagers to increase their income either by direct fishing, through offering rental boats or serving as boat drivers for others.
