KUCHING: Kuching South City (MBKS) mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng and China’s Consul-General Xing Weiping discussed the possibility of establishing friendship cities between Kuching and China.

Wee said the discussion revolved around the ability to share Sarawak’s and China’s cultures in their efforts to boost tourism and business potentials.

“As China is one of the few countries that also flourished economically and culturally in the earlier stages of world civlisation, China is indeed a unique country that we know we can learn a lot from their success stories be it in terms of culture, business, tourism, and smart city concept,” Wee said after receiving a courtesy call from Xing and deputy Consul-General Song Chonghong on Today (July 6).

Wee said the potential of exchanging knowledge on the Smart City concept would benefit both Kuching South and China.

“I also briefed His Excellency on the recent recognition by United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) for Kuching City as City of Gastronomy and how the council as well as associations had worked together to bid for the title.

“With such recognition, we will be able to create opportunity for local products to be promoted in cities in China,” he said.

On the upcoming Kuching Festival that will incorporate gastronomy elements, Wee said invitations have been extended to the Indonesia Consulate, Brunei Consulate and China Consulate to join the festival by providing booths so they could promote their delicacies.
