FRIM offers sustainable forestry expertise to Sarawak

KUCHING: The Forest Research Institute of Malaysia (FRIM) is ready to offer its expertise, services and research findings to help the Sarawak forestry industry promote sustainable use of forest resources.

As a start to the initiative, FRIM sponsored a Technology Discussion programme with the support of the Forest Department Sarawak (FDS) here today.

It was attended by over 100 participants including from the timber concessionaires and wood-based companies such as kilns, and plywood and furniture factories.

In his welcoming speech, FRIM director-general Datuk Dr Abd Latif Mohmod, whose speech text was read by the deputy director-general (operations) Dr Khali Aziz Hamzah, said FRIM was willing to assist in providing innovations and solutions to ensure that resources derived from sustainable forest management would be utilised to maximum levels.

Permanent Secretary to the Sarawak Urban Development and Natural Resources Ministry, Datuk Dr Wan Lizozman Wan Omar officiated at the programme, with FRIM deputy director-general (research) Dr Samsudin Musa also present.

The programme saw the participants engage in discussions with FRIM researchers and FDS representatives, with the experts from FRIM also making presentations on various topics which included ‘Biodiversity, Forestry and the Environment’, ‘Forestry Technology’ and ‘Forest Produce’.

A business-matching session to facilitate further discussions between the researchers and programme participants, was also held. – Bernama
