OYA: A young man who has a fresh water fish rearing project (aquaculture) at Kampung Senau here has diversified into cash crop planting.

For his new venture, enterprising Zamil Jam chose to grow fig trees, the first such project in the area.

“In June last year, we started to grow ‘pokok tin’ (fig tree). So far we have more than 330 trees,” he said.

He was confident that despite handling an unfamiliar crop, he said the venture ought to be successful provided some teething problems are solved.

Zamil, who is Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) Kampung Senau Sub-Branch Youth chief, hoped that the project would become literally fruitful so as to benefit not just himself but also his helpers and his community at large.

The fig orchard is actually a joint-effort with his friend, Mohd Hazaifah Abdullah, who is from another village in Dalat District.

Other than directly generating income from his ago-based activities, Zamil also wants to turn the location into an agro-tourism centre.
