KOTA SAMARAHAN: Duriana Sulah Andi, 47, the youngest of five siblings originally from Sibu, has transformed her life through a venture in the world of fashion.

With seven years of experience, she transitioned from a kindergarten teacher in Kuching to a business owner.

Duriana, initially hesitant due to public speaking anxiety and low self-esteem, found her entrepreneurial spirit during a challenging period when she tested positive for Covid-19.

Quarantined at home, her niece’s request to sew a Borneo kaftan marked the beginning of her entrepreneurial journey.

“When the Covid-19 pandemic hit, and I tested positive, I started sewing Borneo kaftans on my niece’s request. The positive response and demand encouraged me to pursue this as a business,” shared Duriana with the New Sarawak Tribune.

With support from friends, Duriana’s confidence grew, leading her to apply for assistance in starting a home business.

“I then sought support from Sarawak Handicrafts—since I also make handicrafts like beads—and the Sarawak Bumiputra Business Council.”

Apart from Borneo kaftans, she also creates blouses, cardigans, burie skirts, necklaces, bracelets, earrings, Iban tangu, and selampai.

She runs a full-time business, offering workshops and live demonstrations at various locations, including Kampung Pinang, Multipurpose Hall Ranting Desa Ilmu, Lubuk Antu, and Kampung Taee Serian.

“I face many challenges in this business, but that’s what excites me. I promote my items through various platforms like WhatsApp, Facebook, TikTok, E-kraf Bazaar, Kaftan Borneo, and Shopee,” she explained.

Despite challenges, Duriana remains steadfast in maintaining the prices of her products. She acknowledged the competitive nature of the business but emphasised the importance of perseverance.

Her dedication has borne fruit as she expanded her market beyond Sarawak to Kuala Lumpur and Sabah. Duriana’s goal is to further expand her business, reaching greater heights outside of Sarawak.

“People who inspire me include my family and friends. My message to small traders is that we can develop our businesses, use our talents for our advancement, and never conceal our potential because government aid funds are constantly available,” she added.

“The Borneo kaftan is made up of two distinct patterns – the simple colour of the cool satin fabric and the pua kumbu patterned fabric.

“Those in the Kuching region who want to buy Borneo kaftans can do so at the Choose Confident Dawifefe Collection Batu Kawa Boutique.”
