KUCHING: Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) have taken the upcycling initiative to heart by repurposing rubber from old tyres into flooring for playgrounds.

“This initiative envisions that the playground flooring upgrade will allow children to enjoy their playtime, fostering community well-being and inspire others to prioritise environmental stewardship,” he said.

He said this when officiating at the handover of rubber flooring at the Batu Kawa Riverbank Park playground here yesterday.

The idea, he said stemmed from issues in disposing old car tyres where many would resort to burning them, damaging the environment.

“That is why we came up with such initiative to use it as rubber flooring as it is a durable material,” he said.

Meanwhile on the process of making rubber floors, Sar-Alam Indah senior project coordinator Gloria Chai Mei Wern said old tyres were ground into smaller pieces and mixed with a binder.

“The rubber flooring is is permeable too, so when it rains, water can still go through the flooring, the soil or the ground below will absorb the sunlight and the water.
This is to ensure that it would not come up and crack the ground,” she said.

Also present during were Sar-Alam Indah director Abang Zulkarnain Openg and distinguished guests.
