KUCHING: Works minister and PKR Sarawak chairman Baru Bian has been given full mandate to prepare the party and lead it into the next state election.
“I have given full mandate to Baru and the state division to prepare the election machinery for the upcoming state election,” said PKR president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim told pressmen after officiating at PKR Sarawak’s Hari Raya and Gawai Dayak open house at Kompleks Belia dan Sukan here yesterday.
“This is so that we can fulfill the aspirations of Sarawakians coming into the election. Sarawak is one of the states that have not been conquered by Pakatan Harapan and we know that the state election is only one year from now.
Anwar noted that the tradition is that the party’s state division will coordinate any elections done in the state.
“It is common that we task the state party leaders to spearhead their party into elections, this is evident during the by-election in Port Dickson, which was led by Negeri Sembilan PKR division.
“I have also asked federal members of the party such as Saratok MP Ali Biju; Water, Land and National Resources Minister Dr Xavier Jayakumar; and PKR vice-president Tian Chua to help the state election machinery,” Anwar explained.
Anwar went on to refute claims that the party is in crisis due to the sex scandal faced by the party involving the PKR deputy president Azmin Ali and PKR Santubong youth chief Haziq Aziz.
“We shouldn’t be in crisis, because our leaders are mature and have gone through these many times before. The party is not beholden to me or Azmin or any one individual, there is a common cause and struggle that unites us.”
On the open house, Anwar said, “I think PKR Sarawak’s idea of organising such a programme for Malay Muslims to celebrate Eid and Dayaks to celebrate Gawai is a good tradition.”
Baru, who was also at the event, echoed Anwar’s views saying, “Racial and religious diversity in Malaysia is unique and has to be celebrated and preserved. Festive seasons in Malaysia are a platform to unite the people of all backgrounds.”
