KUCHING: The Sarawak government is expecting full Covid-19 vaccination for Sarawakians who meet the criteria by August or September this year.

Local Government and Housing Minister Datuk Seri Dr Sim Kui Hian said this included frontliners, high risk individuals with comorbidity and individuals who are 18 years old and above, for the first three phases of vaccination.

On that note, he said the first batch of vaccines would be arriving in the state in the last week of February.

“The first phase is 87,000 doses, which will be shipped within a five-week period beginning at the end of February.”

Dr Sim said this during a Facebook Live session with Sibu Municipal Council chairman Clarence Ting on Monday (Feb 8).

He explained that the first phase of vaccinations would include frontline workers in the state.

“The second phase, which is approximately 900,000 doses, will be given to high-risk individuals with old age, diabetes and high cholesterol, among other comorbidities.

“The third phase is also 900,000 doses and will be given to low-risk individuals who are 18 and above.”

Meanwhile, he also reminded that Sarawakians must be willing to accept vaccinations to effectively lower the number of Covid-19 infections in the state.

“Everyone needs to accept this vaccination because only when 70 per cent of the people are vaccinated that the number of cases will subside.

“When the vaccine arrives, hopefully there will be at least 70 per cent of the people who will accept the vaccination and then everyone can go back to their normal lives.”
