MUKAH: Two hundred and seventeen participants have registered for the Fun Run 2017 to be held on 30 April.

According to a spokesman for the event, Mohammad Fadzli bin Jawawi, the run is held in conjunction with this year’s Mukah Kaul Festival.

“The 5-kilometre run is organised by Mukah Underground Runners Club (MURC) and supported by Mukah Melanau Association (PMM),” he said.

Mohammad Fadzli who is also president of MURC was overwhelmed by the response from locals especially when it is an inaugural event being staged by the club.

A lecturer of Mukah Polytechnic (PMU), Mohd Fadzli was also grateful for the collaboration and hoped to make it as a stepping stone for future programmes for the newly formed club.

When asked by why the name underground was chosen, he said the club was not meant to develop athletes.

“Our club is just an avenue to attract people to run or create a habit of running for health and at the same time to promote healthy activity for all. Our club was formed on 21 November, 2016,” he said.

On their preparation for the run, Fadzli pointed out that their runners have decided to run at night with the venue of the annual Mukah Kaul Festival,  Taman Kala Dana, as the training ground.

“To run at night is fun and safe. Obviously, it would not be a burden when we consider the thing as fun and moreover it is a bit cool to run at night unlike in the day time when you are running under the scorching sun. Of course, safety is of utmost concern and so to run at Kala Dana is a practical alternative because there is no traffic there by that time,” he said, adding that since most of the runners are working people, running at night is ideal for them because they do not have to rush to return home.

“We have agreed to run on every Wednesday at 8.30pm and we hope to see more people will join us next week. At present, we have 62 members and the club is open to the public with a registration fee of RM15 and an annual fee of RM10 per member.

“However, the night run on Wednesday or weekend, those who wish join does not need to be a member of the club. They are free to join in the run because our objective is to attract people to have time for exercises and also to encourage a healthy lifestyle among the people of Mukah,” he said.
