KUCHING: Someone should oversee the functions of the Sago and Nipah Development Board, the State Legislative Assembly was told yesterday (Feb 16).

“I hope that the Cabinet will look into it so that the functions of the board, its noble aims and objectives can be achieved,” said Wilfred Yap (GPS-Kota Sentosa) when debating in support of the Sago and Nipah Development Board Bill, 2022 during the State Legislative Assembly (DUN) Sitting yesterday (Feb 16).

Adding on, he also raised a few areas of concern with regard to the board.

Some of it, he said, concerned Section 34 of the establishment of the board where it might from time to time for the purposes of this Ordinance take loans from the government or with the consent of the Majlis Mesyuarat Negeri from any other sources.

He also touched on Section 18 where it gave “its members personal immunity; Section 22 on the obligation of secrecy; and Section 21 on the public authorities protection Act that shall apply to any action suit, prosecution or proceeding against the board or any other member officer, employee or agent of the board in respect of any act, neglect, or default done or committed by him in such capacity.”

“I fully support the Sago and Nipah Development Board Bill, 2022. My question is, assuming that the board is set up, who will actually ensure the functions of the board?

“There must be scrutiny over this particular board and I hope that the Cabinet will look into it,” he said.
