TELANG USAN: The allocation of Agriculture Facilitation Funds (AFF) by the state government will be able to transform the rural economy, said Telang Usan assemblyman Dennis Ngau.
“The move to allocate a sum of RM1 million for state government constituencies to implement agriculture and livestock programmes is an innovative step towards to improve the local economy.
“This was also a manifestation of the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) people centric policies to ensure all communities have access to the opportunities given,” he said.
He said this when distributing pineapple suckers to 60 participants of the AFF programme at Long Tujang, Sungai Apoh recently. Each received 775 MD2 and N36 quality pineapple suckers, fertilisers, and other equipment costing RM6,750.
Dennis said the settlement has the potential in growing high quality pineapples and that through commercial farming, the participants of the programme can be successful farmers and improve their income.
“The state government will provide basic training and materials for planting and we hope every participant will reciprocate by taking this opportunity with both hands. It is my dream to see the Penan be successful in modern farming.
“To realise this, I will ensure personnel from Agriculture Department will go down to monitor the progress of the pineapple farm,” he said.
The Telang Usan assemblyman said more than 179 families comprising 895 individuals from 30 longhouses in the constituency has been approved to participate in 2020 AFF projects.
He said the request for additional funding has been made to the Agriculture Modernisation, Native Land and Regional Development Ministry due to encouraging response.
“Under the able leadership of GPS and Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg, not only do we see physical development, but also improvement to the people’s economy.
“I assure you that we will not stop here. We’ll find ways to bring development projects to Telang Usan as we aim to achieve better economic standings among our people,” he said.
