Funeral ceremonies, death prayers cause new cluster

KUCHING: The State Health Department (JKNS) today (July 1) declared a new Covid-19 cluster in the Kuching district.

The Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) said that the new Lorong 3 Kampung Siol Kandis cluster involved several families at Lorong 3, Kampung Siol Kandis in Petra Jaya here.

The spread of Covid-19 occurred through funeral ceremonies and death prayers from June 2 toJune 4 and on June 12. It further spread through social movements and close contacts among individuals and families of individuals who attended the ceremonies.

Of the 123 people who were screened, 45 including the index case tested positive while 78 were negative.

The SDMC said all positive cases were admitted to the Sarawak General Hospital (SGH) and Low Risk Quarantine and Treatment Centre (PKRC) in Kuching for   isolation and further treatment.

It also announced the end of one cluster, namely, the Jalan Haji Lampam cluster in the Miri district as no new cases were reported there in the last 28 days.

The committee added 16 of the 95 active clusters   in the state had recorded 125 new cases today (Thursday).  

It also revealed that the Matu district had turned red after recording 23 local infection cases in the past fortnight. 

With that, the state now has three orange districts, 28 red districts, eight yellow district and only one green district.
