KUCHING: In order to ensure the safe use of Gate-to-Gate connectivity among passengers, additional and thorough testing must be conducted, according to an aviation expert who preferred to remain anonymous.

The expert highlighted that the current flight mode allowed for passengers is primarily for accessing their own playlists on personal devices, while video calls and internet browsing are limited to onboard WiFi services operating on different frequency bands.

“It is crucial to test the onboard services thoroughly to avoid any potential interference with flight communication.

“While it is currently considered as just another onboard flight feature, proper testing and certifications can enable its long-term usage,” stated the expert when contacted by New Sarawak Tribune.

Earlier reports indicated that Malaysia Aviation Group (MAG) airlines, including Malaysia Airlines, Firefly, and MASwings, would be the first airlines authorised by the Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia (CAAM) to offer Gate-to-Gate connectivity for passengers.

Starting from Sunday (July 1), passengers on MAG airlines will be allowed to keep their personal electronic devices (PED) switched on throughout the entire journey, from boarding to disembarking, eliminating the need to switch off phones completely during takeoff and landing.
