MIRI: A man is in hospital after jumping from the first floor of a budget hotel at Jalan Airport here to avoid being arrested by police on Friday night.

The incident happened at about 8pm when a team of Miri Criminal Investigation Department (CID) personnel was conducting a raid at the premises. The law enforcers were looking for the suspect and his friend for their alleged involvement in a series of theft and house breaking offences in the city.

It was reported that the 31-year-old suspect, a local, landed on a parking lot behind the hotel building.

The man is currently in stable condition in Miri Hospital.

During the raid, police seized several items believed to be stolen.

The suspect’s friend, aged 28, was also detained to assist in investigations.

Among the items seized included three handphones, a powerbank, a machete and a sling bag containing tools used in house break-in activities.

Preliminary investigation revealed that one of the suspects had four criminal records.

Miri Police chief ACP Lim Meng Seah who confirmed the arrest, said the case is being investigated under Section 379 of the Penal Code for theft.
