MIRI: Gabions are being installed to prevent further erosion of Lutong Beach.

Minister of Transport Datuk Lee Kim Shin said the RM369,000 project, which would cover 185 metres of the shoreline, started yesterday (4 Jan) and was expected to be completed in three or four weeks’ time.

Met after inspecting the project on Tuesday, he explained,

“The project involves the Public Works Department Miri (JKR) and the Department of Irrigation and Drainage Sarawak (DID).This is a temporary alternative solution.”

He added a long term solution to resolve the problem would be building a rock revetment similar to those along   Kuala Batu 1 in Kuala Baram.  The project would be carried out by DID Miri.

During the visit to Lutong Beach, Lee was accompanied by JKR Miri divisional engineer Chong Chi Fam and an engineer from DID Miri Hidayati Ismail.

Recently, strong waves brought mounds of trash from the ocean to the beach.

“Work to clear the trash is being carried out,” said Lee.
