KUCHING: Police here have busted a gang robbing convenience stores with the arrest of three men, suspected to be connected to a heist at a 24-hour convenience store recently.

Kuching district police chief ACP Awang Din Awang Gani said the trio were all locals aged between 24 and 28.

They were arrested by police on Friday for alleged involvement in an armed robbery at a 24-hour convenience store at Pending in the wee hours of May 4.

“During the incident, the suspects entered the premises and threatened the store employee with a sharp object before taking away with them valuable items (cash, mobile phone and computer),” he said when contacted today.

Awang Din said the arrest of the suspects could help the police to solve other related cases. He added police were   hunting down another accomplice still at large.

The three suspects were brought to the Kuching Court yesterday for a remand order to be granted under Section 117 of the Criminal Procedure Code for the purpose of further investigation.

Awang Din added the suspects had prior criminal records and previous convictions for possession of drugs or other drug offences.

“The case is being investigated under Section 395 of the Penal Code and Section 397 of the same Code. If convicted, they face a jail sentence of up to 20 years with whipping,” he said.

Awang Din also urged the public to continue cooperating with the police and be their eyes and ears.
