KUALA LUMPUR: National top golfer, Gavin Kyle Green remained in contention for a breakthrough in the European Tour despite slipping to third place after firing a 69 in the penultimate round of the Omega European Masters at Crans-sur-Sierre Golf Club in Switzerland on Saturday (Sunday in Malaysia).

The 25-year-old who took the second round lead on Friday, dropped three bogeys in the front nine, but surged back with two birdies, followed by an eagle at par 5 14th hole to tie in second place with world number 13th, Tommy Fleetwood of England with a matching threeday total of 12-under-par 198, according to the European Tour website;www.europeantour. com.

World number 735th player, Andres Romero of Argentina who were tied with four others in the second round, surged to the top of the leader board after having carded a 66 for a three-day total of 14-under-par 196, followed by Wade Ormsby of Australia, who was adrift by one shot behind Romero. World number two player, Rory McIlroy of Northern Ireland, was adrift by three shots behind Romero with four others with a 199s total.
