KUCHING: The General Post Office building here is one of the 52 land lots in the list that will be returned to Sarawak.
Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg confirmed that the building located at Jalan Tun Abang Haji Openg will be taken back by the state.
“Yes, it is in the list. Therefore, we want to take it back.
“This building is an iconic structure, and it is also a historical building,” he said.
He said this when fielding questions from reporters after attending the Sarawak Maal Hijrah celebration held at Dewan Kompleks Agama Islam here, yesterday.
On Tuesday, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof said a total of 52 land lots out of 219 land lots acquired by the state government had been agreed to be returned by the federal government.
He had said it was agreed in line with Malaysia Agreement 1963 as the land lots were not developed within five years of their acquisition.
Previously, Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah had expressed his hope that the post office building will be returned to the state government since it contains heritage value.
