KUCHING: The Malaysian Society of Geriatric Medicine (MSGM) anticipates that closer cooperation with the government and its agencies will result in an expansion in the local geriatric physician population to handle the rapidly rising demand for older patients.

President of MSGM Dr Ungku Ameen said, as such, there was a need to increase awareness in the health care needs of older people in Malaysia.

“Our members are continually working hard to promote, conduct and coordinate publications, surveys and research in the field of geriatric medicine.

“We have also provided advice to various regulatory bodies over matters pertaining to the training and credentialing of geriatricians. In various conferences and events both locally and internationally, we have represented the medical profession in matters related to geriatric medicine in Malaysia,” he said.

Disclosing this in his speech at the 17th Malaysian Congress of Geriatrics Medicine being held at Pullman Hotel here, he expressed his joy that the conference was finally held in person after two years of far too many virtual meetings.
