KUCHING: The government encourages the younger generation to get involved in volunteer activities to ensure they stay away from undesirable activities.

Assistant Minister in the Chief Minister’s Department Datuk Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi said the involvement of the young in organisations like Sarawak Volunteer is proof that they distance themselves from unhealthy activities and concentrate their energy on assisting others.

“We always encourage volunteer activities among the community to increase the spirit of helping each other.

“Therefore, the Sarawak government emphasises such activities and set up Sarawak Volunteers,” he said after a courtesy call on him by the Kuching Welfare Volunteers Organisation (PSKK) at the Pantai Damai Service Centre on Thursday (Aug 20).

Rahman Junaid, who is also the Assistant Minister of Utilities (Water Supply), explained that to attract the younger generation, volunteer activities should inculcate the element of fun and gaiety.

“Every activity must benefit the community,” he said.

He also praised PSKK for successfully organising various welfare and volunteer activities since its establishment three years ago.

Rahman Junaid hoped PSKK would continue to organise more activities that could attract the participation of youths.

“I am sure many youths want to be involved in volunteer activities but do not have the opportunity or lack information,” he said.
