KUCHING: It is quite awkward to see a woman having a workshop and working as a mechanic, getting her hands dirty in engine oil, dirt, dust and so on in a field of work which is usually dominated by men.

Throw in the stigma of women not having a deep understanding of cars, it is a rarity to find them venturing into this field.

But Priscillya Stevenson Satu, 24, relishes the challenge, be it the cynicism of men or the stigma, and believes that nothing is impossible if it is done seriously.

“I started doing the workshop business on in February 2021. It started from an interest that was nurtured from high school and I decided to continue my studies at Kuching Vocational College and decided to venture into the field of Mechanical and Automotive Technology,” she told the New Sarawak Tribune.

It was her own idea and plan to go into the business eventually.

“I run a car workshop business specifically for minor to major service and car repair with focus going to engine maintenance/overhaul, undercarriage, suspension, gearbox overhaul, wiring and much more. Not including bodywork services for now. I run this business full time,” she said.

The business hours of her workshop every Monday to Friday are from 8.30am to 6pm while on Saturdays it starts at 8.30am to 3.30pm or thereabouts, depending on pending work.

“So far I am the one who handles the management part. Meanwhile, two mechanics handle the customers’ cars. I am only involved if my work is ready or if I need to go and get spare parts from the supplier,” she said.

Her business location is at the Genesis Light Industrial Park building opposite Everwin Moyan, Genesis Parade on Jalan Batu Kawa – Matang. Next to Red Velvet Bakery Moyan.

“The challenge I face in this business is that the location where I run my business is quite quiet and less visited by customers.

“I have made a post through Facebook and most of the customers who contact us stay farther from our place. But I do not give up and keep posting on Facebook in the hope that there will be many more customers from around us to come and support our business.

“Now we have a few regular customers but we hope that many more people will know about the existence, presence and services we provide,” she said.

So far they have Facebook, Instagram and TikTok accounts but they are more active on Facebook because only there they have response from customers.

The price for car service/repair starts from RM130 for minor service and RM 5,000 and above for major service.
