KUCHING: An elderly couple and their three grandchildren were very happy to receive new mattresses, blankets and pillows donated by the public.

According to Hope Place Kuching founder Kelvin Wan, after his group shared the news about the needy family members, kind members of the public immediately donated the items to them.

He said Chong Leong Shoon, 63, and his sick wife, Apa Sengau, 57, and three grandchildren aged 10, 11 and 14 are staying in an incomplete building in the city here.

“According to Apa, Chong is mentally disabled with schizophrenia and is unable to work. He has an OKU (persons with disabilities) card and receives RM300 monthly from the Social Welfare Department.

“Apa, on the other hand, had her womb removed last year and thus, cannot continue her job at a construction site,” said Wan in a statement today.

He said the elderly couple was taking care of three grandchildren. The children’s parents had left them due to marital problems.
