KUCHING: 40 senior citizens yesterday received “Bak Chang” (rice dumplings) at the Dragon Boat Festival celebration held at Sarawak Hun Nam Siang T’ng, a home for the aged, here.

12 of the elderly were from the Jalan Ong Tiang Swee Old Folks Centre while 28 were residents of the Sarawak Hun Nam Siang T’ng.

The programme was organised jointly by SABERKAS Batu Lintang and the Village Security and Development (JKKK) of Tabuan Laru.

Gracing the celebration was the Assistant Minister of Native Land Development, Datuk Roland Sagah Wee Inn.

In his speech, he commended the members of SABERKAS, who were mostly youths, for organising the programme in appreciation of the elderly folks. “This kind of programme provides an opportunity for the young to understand the elderly and vice versa.

“And in this era, both the young and the old, can learn from each other, especially in the era of technology where the young are more experienced in handling it,” added Roland.

The Chairman of SABERKAS Batu Lintang, Kapitan Patrick Tan Peng Chuan also spoke.

He explained that the main purpose of the event was to contribute to the society and to show care for the community.

“We must try to help whoever we can including the poor, needy and elderly.

“Such gestures must be sincere and not only carried out during the festive occasions,” added Tan.
