KUCHING: Winning the battle for Bandar Kuching is no walk in the park for Barisan Nasional (BN) but its candidate, Kho Teck Wan is willing to give her all to wrest the seat back from DAP. With the parliamentary seat being held by the opposition party for the last 15 years, the SUPP Women chief called on voters to give BN a chance this 14th General Election (GE14).

“Let’s not fight in today’s modern society but let’s all fight together for the betterment of our people and also for Bandar Kuching. I hope Kuching people will not be left out in “Team Abang Jo” (Chief Minister, Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg’s Team) when we go fight for Sarawak’s rights.

We should be represented as well. “If the people of Mukah and Baram can be represented, then Bandar Kuching people should be represented as well. We should work as a team,” she told reporters when met after filing her nomination papers to contest in Bandar Kuching at Dewan Masyarakat MBKS here on Saturday. That day, Kho marched to the nomination centre with hundreds of supporters chanting “Hidup BN”(Long Live BN).

Among those who came to show their support were Muara Tuang State Assemblyman, Dato Idris Buang, Political Secretary to the Chief Minister, Tan Kai and SUPP Kuching Branch Chairperson, Datuk Lily Yong. Kho is facing Dr Kelvin Yii Lee Wuen who has been fielded by the Democratic Action Party (DAP) after its incumbent decided to stand in Stampin. Much like her opponent, this is her first foray into politics.

However, she said she would most probably be more relaxed compared to Yii because he and his party would be fighting hard to defend the seat. “I will take it very easy. So long as my heart is with the people, I believe we can do no wrong.

“I just have to give my team the spirit and we will work and fight till the end. If we can reduce the majority, we will reduce and if we can win, let’s do it and win,” she said.

The 42-year-old also shared that while growing up, she had been exposed to the world of politics as her mother, Penghulu Tan Njun In, was involved in SUPP, having served as the party’s executive committee member as well as Pending branch Women chief.

“I am the second generation of SUPP members and my parents and their generation have long been in the party, fighting for Sarawakian rights,” she said.
