KUCHING: The federal government has been urged to give higher grades and positions to senior officers of the state’s Fire and Rescue Department.

Welfare, Community Wellbeing, Women, Family and Childhood Development Minister Datuk Seri Fatimah Abdullah made the call yesterday as part of her New Year wish for the department.

She said the department was among the agencies involved directly in the Covid-19 pandemic management.

“I feel that the federal government should consider upgrading the positions or grades for these senior officers in Sarawak. This is akin to giving them higher recognition because their tasks are not easy and  very challenging to accomplish,” she said when speaking at the monthly assembly of Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department held at its headquarters here at Jalan Setia Raja today.

Fatimah also emphasised that the department’s responsibility was crucial during times of emergency.

Among its tasks and roles, she added, was to carry out the disinfection and decontamination process, provide facilities including logistics and vehicles, as well as assists the Health Ministry (MoH) in the management of the remains of those who succumbed to the Covid-19 pandemic.
