KUCHING: Constructive criticism is needed to ensure the state government’s take on the post Covid-19 exit strategy is effective.
Sarawak Federation of Chinese Associations and Kuching, Samarahan, Serian, Divisions Chinese Associations president Datuk Richard Wee said while the state government had implemented numerous immediate socioeconomic initiatives to alleviate the impact of Covid-19, it had also formed a Sarawak Economic Action Council (SEAC) to formulate economic agendas for the state post Covid-19.
“In this regard, we appreciate the fact that the government has reached out to non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and the business communities on a number of occasions to gather feedback as well as suggestions and comments as to what the key touch points that needed to be addressed.
“Thus, I would sincerely urge and encourage all segments of society to work together in contributing constructive ideas and comments to move our state forward together in a sustainable manner, rather than sowing discontent, making unfair criticism and disparaging remarks on the efforts and initiatives taken by the Sarawak government,” he said in a statement on Thursday.
He further mentioned that the setting up of the SEAC was a very good move and hoped that sufficient time and resources would be given to complete their job effectively.
Apart from that, Wee also shared that he had attended a meeting on Wednesday on the Sarawak Economy Post Covid-19 which aimed to chart the state’s economic exit strategy post Covid-19.
“During the meeting, Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg outlined the new core principles of the strategy and he emphasised that the previous announced initiatives will have to complement the new initiatives.
“The chief minister also informed the meeting that, for the immediate term, the Sarawak government is also reviewing the aid packages announced earlier and is prepared to consider providing additional assistance if needed,” he elaborated.
He added that the people should not be confused that in formulating new economic strategies for the future, the immediate measures needed for the current challenges in combating the pandemic will not be addressed.
“Therefore, I would like to borrow a quotation from a famous saying that ‘One can both walk and chew gum at the same time.’ In essence, it means that the government can work on both short term as well as longer term issues at the same time,” he said.
