KUCHING: People have been advised to give way to emergency vehicles on the road.

Welfare, Community Wellbeing, Women, Family and Childhood Development Minister Datuk Seri Fatimah Abdullah told reporters this after launching the Tupong Women Welfare Association at the Kampung Kolong 2 community hall at Jalan Sungai Tengah yesterday

“Those driving emergency vehicles with the sirens on are going to destinations to save lives or to  hospitals. Therefore, we as responsible drivers should slow down and give way,” she said.

Fatimah added that the recent case of a sport utility vehicle (SUV) knocking into an ambulance which was carrying a pregnant woman  was an important lesson for all motorists.

It was also a reminder to them to be careful and alert while driving.

“We must never take the sirens of the emergency vehicles lightly or else, there will be road accidents,” she pointed out.

Fatimah added that luckily, nothing serious happened to the pregnant woman and her baby and the two nurses in the ambulance.
