KUCHING: Sarawak Children’s Cancer Society (SCCS) will be launching its Go Bald Virtual fundraising campaign this Sunday (Aug 9) at 2pm.

In view of the Covid-19 pandemic, SCCS said it was necessary for the launch to be held online, which would be available on its Facebook page at fb.com/gobald

The launch will feature representatives from statewide, including a father, and also an uncle, of childhood cancer patients, an adult cancer survivor, and long-term GoBald volunteers.

This will also be the first time that GoBald is featuring ambassadors from each area of Sarawak, who are childhood cancer patients, representing the children in Sarawak afflicted by cancer.

SCCS president Jocelyn Hee said it was better to avoid public events at this time, at the same time they were giving the public a chance to still help SCCS to support children with cancer, by raising funds online.

“The public can register for the event, to fund raise and go bald, or just to fund raise, at the website www.gobald.my

“The fundraising campaign will run from Aug 9 till Sept 30. We are going to do the shaving at the salons, where those who signed up will be able to book their salon appointment on the website as well. A minimum pledge of RM300 will be required to book your appointment to Go Bald,” she said.

She added that the pledge of RM300 would allow for the provision of essential services, such as a care pack for new patients adjusting to life at the ward, or a lab test from private institutions, or three filters, which are used to prevent infection during blood transfusions, or one return trip for patients from rural areas coming for treatment, or 10 nights of lodging and meal for one child and their caregiver.

“Beyond that, by choosing to go bald, you are also pledging to become an advocate and a cheerleader for children and families who are affected by childhood cancer in Sarawak.”

She mentioned that the decision to take the Go Bald event online came following the success of the GoBald at Home Campaign in May, during the movement control order period, where more than 20 independent participants raised over RM40,000.

“The number of donations that SCCS has received to date this year, has not been as forthcoming as it has been in previous years. We hope the public will continue to support us with this Go Bald campaign so we can provide essential services to children with cancer here in Sarawak, especially at this time when the children are at such a high risk because of the Covid-19 pandemic.”
