CEILING PRICE OF FACE MASKS

KUCHING: The government has been urged to further lower the ceiling prices of face masks.

Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) Women chief Kho Teck Wan said although the ceiling price of face masks now has dropped to RM 1 per piece, but not everyone can afford them for daily use.

“I therefore urge the government to lower the ceiling price of mask once again, especially since the schools in Kuching, Samarahan and Serian districts will be in full session starting next week,” she said in a statement.

She said due to the reopening of schools, more parents will need to prepare masks for their children.

“Five months have passed since the movement control order (MCO) was enforced in March this year and the people in general are well aware of the standard operating procedures (SOPs) and advised to practice precaution when going out.

“We know by now that wearing a mask will reduce our chances of getting infected. A reusable face mask made out of cloth is better than no mask at all,” she said.

She also urged kind Samaritans to offer a mask to the elderly or strangers who have forgotten to wear a mask in public.

“Life is too precious. Since there is no cure for Covid-19, we should focus our energy and efforts on awareness, prevention and conducting more random Covid-19 tests, instead of a petition to reduce the fine,” she said.

She was commenting on Bandar Kuching MP Dr Kelvin Yii and several lawmakers who have signed a petition, urging the government to reduce the RM1,000 fine for not wearing face masks in public places.

“Let’s help remind and get more people to wear face masks. Together we can overcome this Covid-19,” she said.
