DAPSY ROAD SIGNAGE

KUCHING: Democratic Action Party Socialist Youth (DAPSY) should have gone through the proper channel before pasting Chinese character on road signs here, said Sarawak Federation of Chinese Associations (SFCA) president Datuk Richard Wee.

He said while it was good to have multilingual road signs as it showcased the harmonious society of Sarawak, Dapsy should not have taken the law into their own hands.

“To have multilingual signage, it is actually good to show that in Sarawak, there are different types of cultures and traditions. At the same time it would also be good for all foreign visitors if they come to Sarawak.

“While that is a good thing, I think Dapsy’s way of doing it is not the right way,” he told New Sarawak Tribune on Friday.

Wee was responding to Dapsy’s action of pasting Chinese characters on road signs at Jalan Main Bazaar, Wayang Street and Jalan Green Hill on Thursday.

“What they should have done is to go through the proper channel, because there are laws and regulations that you need to follow if you wish to do something,” he said.

He said one can always approach the respective councils, appealled and reasoned out what needed to be done, and believed that the matter could be solved.

“Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) and Kuching North City Council (MBKS) are already having that kind of practice (of having multilingual road signs).

“So, we hope that in DBKU areas, they would also have plans to roll it out,” he said.

Wee believed that Dapsy’s act was to seek publicity or gain political mileage.
