KUALA LUMPUR: Nurini Kassim is the apt choice for chief executive officer to strengthen the position of the Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama), said Communications and Multimedia Minister Gobind Singh Deo.

“I welcome her appointment. She is a capable person and the precise choice for us to together build and strengthen Bernama,” he said during a visit to the Media Room at Parliament House.

The minister had earlier announced the appointment of Nurini as the Bernama CEO, the first woman to hold the post. Nurini, 55, assumes the post on Jan 1, 2019, taking over from Datuk Zulkefli Salleh who completed his term of service on Oct 3.

Gobind said Nurini, who has a background of management and corporate affairs, would certainly be able to provide proposals for Bernama’s business model to meet the challenges ahead. He had also met with Nurini several times to discuss the future of Bernama.

“We understand that the media today is facing new challenges, especially in the digital world era. I feel Bernama should also be prepared to face these challenges,” he said.
