SIBU: The General Operations Force (GOF) seized 2,460 cartons of smuggled cigarettes worth RM492,000 including taxes during a raid conducted on an empty house here on Thursday.
The raid was carried out by the 10th Battalion of the GOF together with officers from the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC). Leading the raid was GOF’s Inspector Mohd Salman Zulfitri Sheekandar.

In a press conference yesterday, GOF Battalion 10 commanding officer Supt Sanudin Mohd Isa said, “We suspected the empty house was being used as storage for smuggled goods.
“Sure enough, the team found several boxes of cigarettes hidden under a canvas. No arrests were made and no one had come forward to acknowledge ownership of the goods.

“We believe the cigarettes were meant for distribution in and around Sibu.” According to him, all items will be sent to the Sibu central police station’s criminal investigation department.
He further said the case will be investigated under Customs Act 1967.
