GOF seizes contrabands worth over RM30.6mil

KUCHING: Sarawak General Operations Force (GOF) seized smuggled contrabands comprising cigarettes, alcoholic beverages and other products valued at over RM30.664 million from January to October this year.

Its commanding officer Datuk Khaw Kok Chin said the contrabands were seized in 111 raids conducted under Op Awas, Op Batas and Op Libas throughout the state.

He told a press conference here yesterday that a lorry driver, aged 54 was arrested after he was caught with 8,000 cartons of smuggled cigarettes worth more than RM1,965,000 at 3.45pm at the Muara Tabuan Industrial area on Thursday afternoon.

He said GOF personnel have been trailing the suspect for two weeks under a special operation.

The suspect was coming down from Serikin, Bau with the smuggled fags believed to be for markets in Bintulu, Sibu and Miri. Khaw said the suspect was detained for questioning.

He faces charges under the Customs Act 1967 for smuggling and liable to a fine of ten times the value of the goods or RM100,000 or jail not less than six months or both.
