KUCHING: A group of Sarawakian and Malayan golfers are enjoying their favourite sport while also giving back to the needy.

Golf Persaudaraan Sarawak dan Semenanjung founder Ikhwan Zaidell said the group would be contributing RM8,000 to assist the less fortunate during Ramadan.

He said the money was from the group’s cumulative prize pool through numerous games played since last year on top of personal contributions from members.

“Every week, we would play a round of golf and we would pitch in for food and for our prize pool. So, a percentage of the collection would be set aside for us to give back to the asnaf (zakat beneficiaries).”

Ikhwan was speaking to New Sarawak Tribune here on Tuesday (April 12), accompanied by group members, including co-founder Omar Shuib and Ahid Bohari.

“We are hoping to ease the burden of the underprivileged during the pandemic and during the fasting month so that they can have a more meaningful Aidilfitri.

“Even though it is only a small amount, what is important is that this act of charity is able to cultivate the spirit of togetherness in our group as we are all sincere in helping those in need.”

He added: “The amount we collected each game was small but over time, it became significantly more.

“We hope to give more in the years to come as we continue to give our best in assisting those in need.

“We also hope that other golfers would come forward to assist the needy in Sarawak.”
