WELLINGTON: Google Cloud has decided to establish a New Zealand cloud region, a move welcomed by the New Zealand government.

The decision was made through Google Cloud’s independent due diligence, and it is not a government procurement, according to New Zealand Minister for the Digital Economy and Communications David Clark on Wednesday, said Xinhua.

“Becoming a cloud region will mean New Zealand businesses will have a choice to keep their data onshore, and work with Google Cloud’s domestic team to really drive digital transformation here.

“Onshore cloud facilities provide stronger control of New Zealand’s data because it is held here, where our laws and protections apply,” Clark said in a statement.

Last year in September, Amazon Web Services had decided to establish a cloud region in New Zealand.

“In 2020, Microsoft Azure set up a cloud region here, and these moves help the country grow the digital economy,” he added. – BERNAMA
