KUCHING: Sarawak government should look into the closed-circuit television (CCTV) programme before embarking on another similar large-scale project.

Michael Kong, Special Assistant to Sarawak DAP chairman Chong Chieng Jen, was referring to the Kuching Smart City Initiative, where the Ministry of Public Health, Housing and Local Government will collaborate with the Sarawak Multimedia Authority (SMA) to install 800 CCTVs in 200 strategic locations in four local council areas.

Currently, he said, there were 18 CCTVs installed at numerous locations within Padawan Municipal Council’s (MPP) jurisdiction, costing about RM600,000 or approximately RM33,000.00 per unit.

“These CCTVs were previously installed on a trial basis for future plans. However, most of the CCTVs are not operational now, including those installed at Jalan Arang and Jalan Dogan’s roundabout,” he said in a statement today.

“As such, I urge the Sarawak government to look into MPP’s existing CCTV system and make sure all of them are in working order. Any issues or problems faced ought to be identified and fine-tuned before embarking on another large-scale project which will cost the taxpayers tens of millions of ringgit,” he added.
