TANJONG MANIS: The Sarawak government will develop Belawai near here into the ‘Hawaii of Sarawak’ by providing infrastructure projects such as the waterfront parks and other tourist facilities.

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said he would readily approve the waterfront project which would include upgrading the facilities along the Belawai beach.

The Belawai waterfront project would complement the other facilities to further boost the local tourism industry.

“This area will attract people using the coastal road from Kuching to Miri and they can spend their night here before continuing their journey, especially during the school holiday,” he said.

Abang Johari proposed the construction of a park for caravan vehicles (camper cars) on Belawai beach.

“Maybe some people use caravans to spend a night here. We will further improve the infrastructure here.

“I appreciate the asipration of turning Belawai into the ‘Hawaii of Sarawak’.” he said at a Hari Raya Aidilfitri gathering in Belawai on Saturday.

The request for the waterfront project was highlighted earlier by Deputy Minister for Natural Resources and Urban Development, Datuk Len Talif Salleh in his welcoming speech.

Abang Johari also approved the Village Expansion Scheme (SPK) for Kampung Belawai and Kampung Jerijih with an allocation of RM33.7 million.

It would be implemented similar to the scheme in Kemuyang Sibu, Kabong, and other areas under the state Land and Survey Department (JTS).

The Premier said the state government had adopted a new system in implementing the SPK, under which eligible applicants from the B40 (low income) group would be eligible to own decent housing units.
