KUCHING: The Melaka state election results will not determine the outcome of the upcoming Sarawak state election.

Political analyst Dr Saudi Narani said Melaka and Sarawak have entirely different backgrounds and different political scenarios, and therefore different issues for voters to decide on.

“I do not deny the consequences or impact. The boomerang effect is very much expected by some individuals or opposition to backfire on Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS), whose members are formerly Barisan Nasional (BN) partners in the then ruling coalition.

“But one must not forget that GPS is a very strong state government under the dynamic leadership of Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg and his very strong team members of various ethnicities in the cabinet represent Sarawakians from all walks of life,” he said when contacted on Sunday (Nov 21).

He was commenting on the results of the Melaka state election on Saturday, in which BN secured a two-thirds majority in the 28-seat state assembly.

“Sarawak has progressed tremendously under the current leadership, hence the Melaka election will not have much impact on the local political scenario.

“The resounding victory of BN in Melaka is something for the people to rejoice. Sarawak is set to see a landslide victory by GPS,” he said.

In the Melaka state election, BN won 21 seats, of which 18 were won by United Malays National Organisation (Umno), two by Malaysian Chinese Association (MCA), and one by Malaysian Indian Congress (MIC).

Pakatan Harapan (PH) won five seats whereas Perikatan Nasional (PN) secured two.
