KUCHING: A stable federal government is needed and Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) is doing its part to set aside differences and work together with parties across the political divide for the betterment of the country.

Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) Youth Chief Miro Simuh said GPS being a coalition that abides by the National Principles, pledging loyalty to the King and Country, heeded the decree by His Majesty, Yang di-Pertuan Agong to form a unity federal government.

“We seek to clarify that after the end of the 15th general election (GE15), there were no clear majority from contesting parties for them to form a federal government.

“This was taken into consideration by His Majesty and with his wisdom, decreed that a unity federal government must be formed to settle the political impasse,” said Miro in a press statement on Sunday.

He said this as reference to an earlier statement by Sarawak Democratic Action Party (DAP) chairman Chong Chieng Jen on December 3.

The state DAP chief in his statement said the DAP and Pakatan Harapan (PH) was able to convince GPS to change its initial stand and support Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

“We accept the olive branch extended by the DAP through its secretary-general Anthony Loke Siew Fook, who admitted the mistakes by the party and apologised to the Sarawak government and Sarawakians, with an open heart.

“The present federal government is a unity government and not a PH federal government, as has been made clear in previous instances.

“To say that GPS is joining the Pakatan Harapan federal government is imaginative and creative,” he stressed.

He said it is GPS fervent hope that with this federal government, it would stabilise the politics of the nation; accelerate economic recovery amid global uncertainties and cushion the blow to our economy while the world is heading for a recession.

“We also hope with a strong representation by Sarawak in the federal government, it too will facilitate the return of more rights to Sarawak as enshrined under Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63) and the Inter-Governmental Committee (IGC) Report 1962,” Miro told.
