BINTULU: In preparation for the upcoming Jepak state by-election, the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) has put forward a candidate with a distinctive heritage to effectively represent the diverse interests of the local population.

Parti Rakyat Sarawak (PRS) vice-president Datuk Liwan Lagang praised Sarawak Premier and GPS chairman Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg for his choice of Iskandar Turkee as the candidate.

Notably, he said around 35 per cent of Jepak’s voters are from the Bumiputera, Melayu, and Dayak communities.

He noted that Iskandar’s candidature stands out as he comes from a mixed background; his father is of Melayu Melanau descent, while his mother has Dayak Iban heritage.

“This unique heritage is seen as an asset in reaching out to the diverse Iban voter base in the Jepak constituency, ensuring they do not feel overlooked.”

Liwan said this during a walkabout event at Rumah Joshua Manit on Thursday (Oct 26).

Liwan, who serves as the Deputy Minister for Utility and Telecommunication, expressed confidence in Iskandar, highlighting his extensive experience, which includes his previous role as the National Anti-Drug Agency (AADK) Sarawak director.
