KUCHING: Only the Sarawak government under Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) can transform Sibu and bring it to greater heights, says Datuk Seri Dr Sim Kui Hian.

The state Local Government and Housing Minister added that the state government was able to do so much for Sarawakians due to its autonomy and also financial independence.

“We are very fortunate that the Sarawak government after 2018 under Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg has started its revenue reengineering.

“Without this, we would not have so much funds and would not be able to do so much in terms of financial aid.

“This is so important for Sarawak to be financially independent so that we can choose to do what we know is the best for the state,” he said during Sibu Municipal Council’s (SMC) 40th anniversary celebration held via Zoom on Tuesday (Nov 2).

Dr Sim pointed out that the past 21 months had been challenging for local governments and SMC in particular, due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

“Covid-19 has been so disruptive and has caused a lot of hardships.

“I want to thank the chief minister for helping the council and the people in overcoming some of these hardships through the Sarawakku Sayang Special Aid (BKSS) initiative.”

On the urban renewal initiative for Bukit Assek here, Dr Sim said the project would transform all aspects of Sibu for the next 40 years.
