KUCHING: Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) must win back the Bandar Kuching parliamentary seat in the 15th General Election (GE15) in order to bring more development to Kuching District, said Eric Tay Tze Kok.

The Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) Kuching branch youth chief, who has been named by the party as a candidate to contest in Bandar Kuching in the election, said, “We can see that the Batu Kawa District has developed a lot due to the right person. The public facilities and economy have also improved.”

In a statement yesterday (Oct 24), Tay explained that since Kuching District was a place with historical buildings and cultural relics, he wanted to beautify and upgrade the area in order to attract more tourists and improve its economy.

In the 2018 parliamentary polls, Bandar Kuching incumbent Dr Kelvin Yii retained Bandar Kuching for the Democratic Action Party (DAP) in a straight fight against Kho Teck Wan from SUPP.

Dr Yii polled 48,548 votes against his opponent and won his first election with a convincing 35,973-vote majority.

Meanwhile, Sarawak DAP Chief, Chong Chieng Jen was the Bandar Kuching MP for three terms (2004, 2008 and 2013) before he switched to contest in Stampin in 2018.

Hence, Bandar Kuching parliamentary seat has been under DAP for four consecutive terms.

On Sunday night, Chong announced that Dr Yii would defend the seat in GE15.
