KUCHING: The Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) played an important role in the formation of the federal unity government one year ago and in maintaining the country’s political stability.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim stated that his unity government’s parliamentary strength was able to exceed a two-thirds majority due to the support of GPS.

“Today marks the first anniversary of my unity government …. I cannot ignore the fact that Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg and GPS played a crucial role in this matter,” he said.

“While there were minor turbulences in the first few months of the unity government, we are now able to reflect on our achievements, such as energy transition, digital transformation, and economic vibrancy today – all thanks to the political stability of our country,” he added.

Expressing his gratitude to Abang Johari, he highlighted that the strong support from GPS has enabled the federal government to focus entirely on energy transition for economic growth, job creation, and prosperity.

Speaking at the Global Muslim Business Forum (GMBF) Gala Dinner held at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) yesterday night (Nov 28), Anwar mentioned that Sarawak was leading other states in addressing global climate change within Asia.

He commended Sarawak’s implementation of a bold energy transition plan, with Abang Johari already discussing green energy initiatives such as hydrogen, hydropower, and other measures to tackle climate change.

“Abang Johari exemplifies leadership through taking risks and embracing innovation for the benefit of the state, the country, and its people. Therefore, I encourage everyone here to recognise and appreciate this leadership, along with exploring business and collaboration opportunities during this forum,” he said.

Last year, GPS expressed its support for the formation of a unity government led by Anwar, in line with the decree of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong to overcome political turmoil.

On November 23 last year, GPS was summoned by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, with Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof leading the GPS delegation, where His Majesty advised the formation of a unity government.
