KUCHING: The Kuching Waterfront became a bustling hub as thousands gathered for the New Year’s countdown last night (Dec 31), kicking off the arrival of 2024 with grand celebrations and historical unveilings.
The day’s splendid weather enticed a bustling crowd, gathering as early as 5pm.
Adhering to safety protocols, attendees adorned masks while eagerly anticipating the arrival of Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg and esteemed guests
One of the historical highlights was the naming of the Sarawak state flag, christened “Ibu Pertiwi,” symbolising the motherland.
Abang Johari highlighted the significance behind the name, likening it to the Malaysian flag’s “Jalur Gemilang,” noting that the state flag signifies the essence of the motherland.
Additionally, the tallest flagpole in Malaysia and Southeast Asia, situated at Kuching Waterfront, was also named “Ibu Pertiwi” while the adjacent square is referred to as Ibu Pertiwi Square.
The 99-metre tall flagpole stands proudly between the State Legislative Assembly (DUN) Complex and Fort Margherita.
The ‘Ibu Pertiwi’ flagpole, which is also now the tallest in Southeast Asia and in Malaysia, is located near to the soon completed English-style tea house and a water cascade.
The evening’s themed celebration, ‘Let’s Celebrate Together,’ featured performances by esteemed Malaysian artists such as Datuk Amy Search, Datuk Zainal Abidin, Hael Hussaini, Floor 88, and D’Fam.
Alongside, there were aerobics sessions, cultural showcases, performances by the Sarawak State Symphony Orchestra (SONS) Junior, and a boat parade along the Sarawak river.
The grand finale welcomed the New Year with a dazzling 10-minute musical fireworks display, lighting up the night sky in a spectacle of colours and joy.
Notable attendees included the Premier’s wife, Puan Sri Juma’ani Tuanku Bujang, Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas and Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Minister Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah among others.
