KUCHING: The grand celebration of Chap Goh Mei at the Siniawan old bazaar will return on Sunday (Feb 5) after two years of Covid-19 restrictions.
In stating this, Deputy Premier Datuk Seri Dr Sim Kui Hian said the celebration will start in the morning with the annual Ah-Nyong (Chinese goddess GuanYin) traditional street procession that will pass through eight villages.
Following this, he said, there will be a street procession at night at the Siniawan old bazaar with a parade of decorated cars, lanterns, various traditional performances, lion dance (including the Hakka Green Lion) and a fireworks display.
“This event which has been a tradition of the local Hakka descendants for more than a century will now be joined by everyone regardless of backgrounds,” he said.
Aside from the long awaited celebration at Siniawan, Sim also said that in Kuching, there will be celebrations held in conjunction with the Chap Goh Mei.
“On Saturday night (Feb 4), Kuching South City Council (MBKS) will hold a Chap Goh Mei Concert at the Open Theater.
“And on the night of the following day (Feb 5), there will be a fireworks performance at Batu Kawah Riverbank Park.
“It is hoped that the public can come and join us to celebrate this occasion so that we will truly have the best celebration in Sarawak for the year of the rabbit,” he said.
