Firefighters from Sungai Merah and Sibu fire stations working to put out the fire on Friday.

SIBU: A grocery store in the old Sungai Merah market building caught fire on today.

According to the Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) operations centre, two teams of firefighters from the Sungai Merah and Sibu fire stations were deployed to scene after receiving a distress call around 12.53am.

No casualties were reported during the incident and investigations are ongoing to determine the cause of the fire and estimated loss.

The operation wrapped up at 2.15am and the teams returned to their stations after everything is deemed safe.

The 10×30 square feet premises in a double-storey building was 35 percent damaged.
