MIRI: The May 16 gunfight at Taman Jelita between three robbers and two policemen has been described as a “local crime incident” and nothing to do with gangsterism.

“No need for public to panic,” said Sarawak Police Commissioner Datuk Azman Yusof who disclosed that the suspects had been identified.

Efforts to locate the third suspect who escaped after the shooting have been stepped up, he said during a press conference yesterday at the local police headquarters. His deputy Datuk Pahlawan Dzuraidi Ibrahim and Miri police chief, ACP Lim Meng Seah.

On Corporal William Bell Jol, who got injured in the shooting, Azman said he would be given some form of recognition later.

“William and his partner, Constable Mohd Roni Abd Manap, 26, bravely went to help the victims although they knew the situation was dangerous. You can’t imagine what they went through when the guns went off,” he said.

In the 1pm shootout, William got shot in the left arm while one of the robbers was shot in the leg.

The masked robbers were armed with semi-automatic guns, two of which were discovered and identified as a Steyr and a Walther PPK made in West Germany.

The Walther PPK gun used by the second suspect was found four days after the shooting inside a drain less than 50 meters from the crime scene.
