GEORGE TOWN: Homegrown jeweller, Habib Group, held a groundbreaking ceremony today in Bandar Tanjong Pinang, Tanjung Tokong for a RM25 million mosque with a diamond qubba (dome) expected to be ready by May 2024.

Its executive chairman Datuk Seri Meer Sadik Habib said it will span 8,615sqm and be able to accommodate over 1,500 worshippers at a given time.

It will also have facilities like a multipurpose hall, lecture and meeting rooms, as well as be surrounded by greenery to create a peaceful atmosphere.

Meer said he was fulfilling his father’s dream of building a mosque in the family’s place of origin to benefit the local community.

“Habib Group has built a mosque abroad and this will be the first time a Habib Mosque is being built here which is also where my late father (Datuk Habib Mohamed Abdul Latif) was born,” he told reporters after the ceremony, which was attended by Yang di-Pertua Negeri Tun Ahmad Fuzi Abdul Razak and Penang Deputy Chief Minister I and Islamic Religious Council president, Datuk Ahmad Zakiyuddin Abd Rahman.

Meer said the design of the mosque will be influenced by the Jawi Peranakan culture found in Penang Island, while the minarets will be inspired by the tanglung (Chinese lantern).

“The inspiration for the dome comes from a cut diamond and is a tribute to the jewellery wearing culture of the Jawi Peranakan people,” he said. – BERNAMA
